After the First Fall Windstorm: An Exterior Check for Nanaimo Homes

Moss Bros TeamOctober 8, 2026

Every fall on central Vancouver Island there's a night when the wind really picks up. The firs sway, the power flickers, and in the morning the deck is covered in needles, twigs and little green clumps you don't remember being there. For a lot of Nanaimo, Lantzville and Oceanside homeowners, that first big blow is the real start of the wet season.

It's also the best moment to take a look around the outside of your house. A windstorm drops a whole season's worth of debris in one go, and most of it lands exactly where it causes trouble: in gutters, roof valleys and downspouts, right before the steady rain arrives. Here's a simple, safe way to check your home afterwards and decide what needs attention.

First, stay on the ground

Before anything else: you don't need a ladder to do this check. Wet roofs, slick gutters and gusty leftover wind are a bad mix, and most of what you need to know can be seen from the yard, a window or the driveway.

A few hard rules:

  • Stay well away from any downed or sagging power line. Treat it as live and report it to BC Hydro.
  • Leave hanging or cracked branches alone. A limb caught in a tree can come down without warning. That's a job for an arborist.
  • Don't climb onto a wet roof to clear needles or moss. It's slippery even on a dry day.

Once you've ruled those out, grab a coffee and walk the property.

Gutters: the first place storm debris ends up

Wind strips needles, cones, leaves and small twigs from the big conifers and drops them straight into your gutters. Gutters that were fine last week can be packed after one night, especially on homes under Douglas fir and cedar.

From the ground, look for:

  • Plants, twigs or needles sticking up over the gutter edge
  • Water spilling over the side during the next rain, instead of running to the downspout
  • Downspouts that drip or stay dry while the gutters are full of water
  • A run that looks bent or pulled away from the fascia after the wind

If you see any of these, it's worth booking a gutter cleaning before the heavier rain arrives. We clear the troughs by hand and with blowers, flush every downspout, and give you an inspection report that flags damage, sagging or missing sections. That report is especially handy after a storm, because it tells you whether you just need a clean or whether something needs a repair from a gutter installer.

Got gutter guards? Storms are exactly when they get buried. Fine needles slip through and broken twigs pile on top. Our post on whether gutter guards still need cleaning explains what to watch for.

The roof: look for loose moss and piled-up debris

Wind does two things to a mossy roof. It knocks loose clumps off the shingles, which then roll into the gutters, and it piles needles and twigs into valleys and behind chimneys, where they hold moisture against the roof all winter.

Check from the yard, or from a second-storey window if you have a good view:

  • Green clumps on the deck, driveway or lawn under the roofline mean moss is breaking up and washing off the roof
  • Dark piles in the valleys, where two roof slopes meet
  • Debris collected behind the chimney or around skylights and vents
  • Patches that look lighter or bare, which can mean moss tore away, taking surface granules with it

A bit of loose moss isn't an emergency. It does mean the roof is ready for treatment, and fall is a good time to do it. We use a low-pressure soft wash on roofs, never high pressure, and we can install zinc strips afterwards to slow regrowth. A gutter flush is part of the job, since dead moss and debris wash down into the troughs. See our roof cleaning and moss removal pages for how it works, and why roof moss keeps coming back for the longer story.

One important note: if you see missing, lifted or cracked shingles, or a leak inside, call a roofer first. Cleaning comes after the roof is sound.

Decks, stairs and walkways

Storm debris is messy, and it's also a slip hazard. Wet needles on deck boards and concrete steps are slippery on their own, and once they break down they feed the green film that makes Island decks slick all winter.

  • Sweep or blow off loose needles and twigs from steps and paths as soon as it's safe
  • Check shady corners, especially the north side and under overhangs, where debris sits longest
  • Look at deck board gaps and paver joints, which trap needles and hold moisture

If a film has already started, or the debris has left stains, pressure washing resets those surfaces. We work year-round, so the rain doesn't stop the job. Our guide to slippery deck stairs in fall covers the trouble spots in more detail.

For bigger cleanups, like branches, piled needles along the fence line and a yard full of debris, our general labour crew handles yard maintenance and debris removal, so the property is tidy again before the next front.

Windows and siding

Wind-driven rain throws grit, pollen, needles and, closer to the water, salt spray onto glass and siding. After a storm, many windows end up with a speckled film that really shows once the low fall sun hits it.

From inside and out, look for:

  • Spotting and streaks on the windward side of the house
  • Needles and debris caught in window tracks and screens
  • Muddy splash marks low on the siding where water bounced off the ground

Window washing covers inside and outside glass, frames and sills, and we remove, clean and reinstall screens. If you're near the water in Lantzville, Parksville or Qualicum Beach, windows on the ocean side often need it most after a blow.

Book once, not three times

After a storm, it's tempting to deal with whatever is most visible and leave the rest. The more efficient approach is one visit in the right order: roof first, then gutters, then pressure washing and windows last, so nothing you clean gets dirty again from above. On our quote form you can pick "Multiple Services" and tell us what you've noticed, or choose "Not Sure" and we'll help you sort it out.

What does it cost? It depends on the specifics: the size of the home, the number of storeys, how much debris and moss came down, and which services you combine. A free quote is the quickest way to get a clear number for your property.

Make the next storm easier

Most Island homes don't just get one windstorm a season. A few habits make the next one less of a scramble:

  • Keep gutters on a schedule. We recommend cleaning at least twice a year, in late fall and spring, and our seasonal plans book it for you.
  • Treat roof moss before it gets thick, so there's less to tear loose in the wind.
  • Keep decks and paths clear through the fall, so debris doesn't sit and break down.
  • Do a walk-around after every big blow. Ten minutes on the ground can catch a clogged downspout before it becomes a wet basement.

Get your home back on track

A windstorm is a reminder that fall on the Island moves fast. If the morning after left your gutters full, your roof shedding moss or your deck covered in needles, we can help you get it all cleaned up before the long wet stretch. Tell us where you are, what you spotted and any photos you took, and we'll plan the visit from there.
