By the last week of October the bigleaf maples and red alders around Nanaimo are letting go. The leaves are broad, they land wet, and they lie flat. On a lot that already has Douglas fir and western red cedar overhead, they do not replace the needle pack in the gutter. They cover it.
A needle mat can still trickle. A wet maple leaf across that mat acts like a shingle. Water from the next rain rides over the lip instead of into the trough, even when the downspout pipe underneath is still open. Alder leaves are smaller. Stacked and soaked, they do the same job in layers. That lid is what shows up now, on houses in Nanaimo, Parksville, Lantzville, Ladysmith, Cedar, Qualicum Beach and the rest of the Oceanside, just as the wetter months begin.
Stay off the ladder while you look. Nanaimo receives over 1,100mm of rain a year, and from here through November that rain comes in stacks. Halloween is Saturday, October 31. Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1. Look from the yard in daylight.
Why a broad leaf lids a trough that needles were still moving
Cedar scales and Douglas fir needles sieve down through September and mid-October, felt together when damp, and pack hardest at the outlet. The mid-October cedar needle flush is about that second load. A trough can look busy with needles and still pass a light rain, because water finds a channel through the felt.
A bigleaf maple leaf is wide enough to span a residential gutter. When it lands wet on a needle mat, it sticks, and the next leaf overlaps it. Rain presses the sheet down. Winged maple keys wedge into the same mat, so a breeze after the shower does not clear it. The channels close, and water has an easier path over the front lip than through the debris to the downspout.
Alder fills the gaps the maple leaves open
Red alder grows on the same lots, along creeks and where hardwoods were left at the property line. The leaves are smaller. They curl, overlap, and pack into the corner, the end cap, and the notch in front of a hanger. Under fir you get both. The needle pack is the felt. The hardwood leaves are the cap.
Moss gives the leaf something to catch on
A clean shingle sheds a dry leaf in a breeze. A mossy lower course holds it, so the leaf drops into the trough stuck to fragments of growth. If the pitches above are thick, moss removal and roof cleaning belong with the gutter. A soft wash does not vacuum the trough the same day. Treated growth loosens later and joins the leaves through November.
Where the lid shows up first
One run sits under the maple. The street face can still be a thin scatter of needles.
Under the canopy, away from the sidewalk
Walk the side yard. A bigleaf maple often leans over the back eave or the neighbour side, where the gutter is hardest to see from the driveway. Alder does the same along a fence line in Cedar, on a treed street in Parksville, and on lots in Lantzville, Ladysmith and Qualicum Beach. If that side is hidden, say so with the photos.
At the corner, where a leaf folds over the outlet
The outlet is a hole. A broad leaf folds across it, and the needles underneath hold the leaf in place. In the next rain that corner sheets, while the middle of the same gutter still has room.
A plugged pipe fails differently. If the gutter is full, the downspout gurgles, or one spout sits idle while the others run, the elbow is the suspect. The downspout guide stays on that choke point. A leaf lid can sit over an open pipe, because the water never reaches the hole. Both can be true on the same house, which is why the flush belongs with the leaf clear.
On top of a guard
A screen stops some maple leaves from dropping in. Wet leaves still shingle the mesh, water sheets over the cover, and fine cedar scales work through the openings. The gutter guard guide covers that pattern.
What you can see from the yard
Pick a daylight hour and leave the ladder down. After a shower is the honest look, because a lid shows itself when water moves.
- A tan or brown sheet across the lip. Needles look like a sprinkle. A lid is a mat of whole leaves, often with the pale underside of a maple leaf facing you.
- Water sheeting while the downspout still drips. The pipe is moving some water. The trough above it is not taking the rain.
- Leaves plastered to the fascia. Overflow leaves a line of stuck leaves and grit on the board under the lip. The mark outlasts the shower.
- A green edge catching leaves. Moss on the lower courses, with leaves hung in it, means the roof is feeding the trough.
- Soft soil or a dark fan on the walk. Only under that eave. Halloween puts people on the front walk Saturday night, and a spilling gutter keeps that concrete wet.
- A sag under the heavy section. Wet leaves are weight. A gutter that dips, or a hanger pulled from the fascia, is a repair. Photograph it and leave the metal alone.
Why the last days of October are the window
A loose lid this week compacts once November's rains sit on it. Wet leaves break down into the needle pack, the channels close, and the same corner overflows until someone clears it. The wetter months are ahead. A trough that already sheets in a modest shower will keep sending water onto the fascia, the siding and the soil along the foundation.
Halloween is Saturday, October 31, and the front walk is in use. Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, so the eave disappears on the way home. A first frost can glue a wet leaf to the mat. It does not empty the gutter. Book the clear for a gap between weather systems.
A simple order for this week
- Walk the canopy side in daylight. Lip, corners, downspout outlets, fascia, and the walk underneath. Name the tree.
- Separate a leaf lid from a failed gutter. Debris on a sound trough can be cleared. A sag, a split joint, or fascia that is soft and stained through needs a qualified contractor. Cleaning is not gutter repair.
- Note the roof if it is feeding the trough. A green lower course under the maple belongs on the same quote. Bald shingles, a fresh pile of granules, or a ceiling stain goes to a roofer before any wash.
- Book a flush with the leaf clear. Leaves on top and a plug in the elbow travel together. Gutter cleaning includes a full downspout flush.
A packed roof valley dumps the same leaves into the gutter at the first hard rain. The valleys and skylights guide covers that pocket. Mention a dark valley line with the photos.
What a visit clears, and what it leaves alone
The trough work is a debris clear and a full downspout flush. Leaves, cedar scales, fir needles, cones, maple keys, shingle grit and moss fragments come out by hand and with blowers. The lid comes off first, then the felt underneath. Every downspout is flushed from the top until water runs at the bottom elbow, including the second-storey run the driveway does not show.
A sag, a loose hanger, a split, or soft fascia goes to a qualified contractor. A flush will not re-hang a gutter or replace a punky board. The fascia, eaves and soffit guide is the ground check for that wood.
On a sound roof with green lower courses, the roof can share the visit: eco-friendly biodegradable solution at low pressure, time to work, then a controlled rinse. High pressure strips granules and can drive water under the laps. Soft washing is that approach. Pressure washing belongs on the walk the overflow has been soaking, not on the shingles. Zinc strips go on the ridge after moss removal. The site FAQ says most Nanaimo roofs stay moss-free for 3–5 years with soft wash and those strips. Strips do not empty a gutter.
Siding streaks can wait for house washing until the trough stops feeding them. Glass at that eave is a window washing job once the grit stops washing down. The gutter page recommends cleaning at least twice a year in Nanaimo, late fall after the leaves drop and again in spring. This week is that late-fall window. The job to book now takes the lid off before November sits on it.
Leaf lid, needle pack, or a plugged pipe
Match what you can see from the yard during one shower, and name it on the quote.
| What you see from the ground | What it usually means | Sensible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Whole maple or alder leaves flat across the lip, downspout still dripping | A leaf lid. The pipe may still be open | Clear the trough and flush the downspout. Name the tree |
| Gutter full, one spout idle or gurgling | A plug in the outlet, elbow, or pipe | A full downspout flush |
| Leaves shingled on a guard, water over the cover | A lid on the guard, fines in the trough | Clear the cover and the trough under it |
| Green lower courses holding leaves | Moss on the eave feeding the gutter | Soft wash on a sound roof, plus the gutter clear |
| Gutter dips, a hanger pulled, fascia soft | The weight has become a repair | A qualified contractor. Cleaning will not re-hang it |
Questions from the driveway
The gutters were cleaned in September. Do the maple leaves still matter? Yes, if a maple or an alder hangs over a run. September took the early debris. The broad leaves are landing now, on top of whatever the fir and cedar have added since.
What if the next dry gap is after Halloween? Book the gap you can get. A clear and a flush do not need a long sunny spell. A leak inside, or a gutter that has pulled off the house, goes to a qualified contractor first.
Book the gutter before the leaf lid sets
A wet maple or alder leaf across a needle pack is enough to send the next rain over the fascia. See the canopy side from the yard this week, and book a clear and a full downspout flush while the leaves are still whole. If the lower courses are green, put the roof on the same visit. A sagging trough or rotten fascia still goes to a qualified contractor first.
